On 22 May 1971 the body of a little boy aged approximately 2 years was found on Tayport beach in Fife. Despite an international search no-one ever came forward to claim him. The mystery remains to this day. His gravestone simply calls him ‘The Unknown Bairn’.
What shall we call you little boy,
Little boy lost and so far from home
Where did you come from little lamb,
And I can’t help but wonder why you’re alone.
Found on the beach, washed up with the tide
Who were you with and what did you say
As the short life ebbed from your body
And your little soul floated away.
Does somebody miss you tonight,
Do someone’s empty arms hug themselves tight
Does a brother or sister wonder why you’re not there
Does a heart break with pain, more than it can bear
Does a Daddy weep for his little man
And a Mummy grieve endlessly, as only she can
So many questions will hang in the air
I just hope you were loved by someone somewhere.
But nobody forgot you little boy
A nation grieved for you though still no family came
Sadness embraced the little town
That took you to its bosom and gave you a name
Time won’t diminish the memory of you
Your days were few and a child you’ll always be
But your little life will always be remembered
And your story told throughout history.
